“Learning is a process of active engagement with experience, it is what people do when they want to make sense of the world.“
MLA definition adapted from the Campaign for Learning. The word Education tends to be used in connection with a more formal setting, such as a school or University whereas the term Learning embraces a range of activities and resources, both formal and informal, and for people of all ages.
Informal learning could be, for example, special events and activities for families, workshops for adults with disabilities or a programme of activities for young people. Formal learning is usually linked to a taught curriculum in schools, colleges or universities, including adult education courses.
The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) produced a website called Inspiring Learning which:
- is based on the belief that every experience in a museum has the potential to encourage learning
- describes what an accessible and inclusive museum which stimulates and supports learning looks like
